Why is this program needed?
Leaders come in many shapes and styles. For some, leadership is a lifetime calling they bring to everything they do. For others, leadership is a role they are called upon to play when situations demand or when they are deemed ready. Whatever its genesis – calling, timing or evolution – there are few organizations that do not require a critical mass of individuals with an unrelenting commitment to excellence and an ability to evoke it in others. This program is unique in that it blends a development approach in coaching that supports both individuals and the systems leaders inhabit.
What are we hoping to achieve?
The program is designed on the basis of three development streams: knowing and empowering self, evoking possibilities for others, and creating systems breakthroughs. In approaching each development stream, the first step is to expand awareness on the nature of these domains. The second step is to help build skillful means to achieve the desired outcomes of leading and coaching. The final step is to work to integrate the learning into a powerful way of being for leaders. As a result of this program, leaders will:
- Expand their capacity for skillful action by becoming more astute observers of themselves and the world around them. After program completion, they will be able to continuously develop their competence in the key domains of their life as leaders and coaches.
- Be better able to draw on their own unique talents to in turn support people in their growth and in achieving remarkable results. They will use their voice as coaches in authentic and powerful ways.
- Embody the possibility for change they want to see in their system. They will be adept in coordinating actions and aligning these actions to the strategic priorities of the organization.
How is the program structured?
This year long program is composed of four sessions. A number of related activities (e.g. research, networking, teamwork) and practices between sessions (generic to the group and tailored to individual needs) fuel the cycle of action, reflection and learning from beginning to end. At the end of the program, the achievement of specified outcomes is validated through a completion process defined by clear performance standards. While each session has a number of specific learning objectives and activities, this program is best described by the three development streams weaved together in those four sessions.
01.Stream 1 – Knowing and Empowering Self
In this stream we explore how human beings grow and the forces that shape who we are, what we see and how we behave. We help to clarify what has meaning for you in the various domains of your life and create a personal development path that aligns your concerns with those of your organization. The process of building competence focuses on critical leadership practices and becomes a living laboratory for deepening your understanding of human development and the role of coaching within it.
02.Stream 2 – Evoking Possibilities for Others
In this stream, we learn about what it takes to be an effective coach and we ground the understanding of coaching into practical models, tools and processes used to work with individual learning partners or clients. We gradually apply this growing competence with real people that have real issues in your own organization, using your unique coaching voice as a powerful instrument for bringing out their best in a consistent and sustainable way. Your practice field in individual coaching provides a broad foundation for extending your capacity to coach systems.
03.Stream 3 – Creating System Breakthroughs
In this stream, we first seek to understand what forms human systems take and the forces that shape them. We help to develop the skills needed to assess the systems within which you operate and explore your influence within them. We introduce skillful means and processes to intervene in systems and disturb patterns that undermine success and long term excellent performance. We help you work with real system breakdowns and opportunities, helping to grow competence in the midst of your own leadership and business agenda.
